Episode 4: Something More...

Ricky chats with Bobby before Whitnee takes him to school. Bobby is very excited about seeing a couple of fellows skiing down the Alps and Bobby jumps up and down, asking Ricky to take him there one day. Ricky looks down with weary eyes and pats Bobby's cheek. He doesn't have the heart to tell him about how hard it is to get out from the ghetto. Ricky is reminded of Lenny from John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" for a moment when he studied it in Literature class. But he can barely remember the book.

Ricky goes inside and has breakfast with Margarita. He finds it very hard to make eye contact with her when she's wearing that see-through top, but feels compelled to tell her that one day he is going to make enough money and accomplish his dreams. He tells her about Bobby's dream about visiting the Alps and hopes he can contribute to that. Margarita isn't listening and doesn't give a fuck. She's thinking about the Skinnamax special that showed the night before.

Ricky decides to skip school for the day and go to the park. He has to make sure his hair looks good. It's been a while since he's had a girlfriend. His last girlfriend, Jenisha, left him for a maxi conductor and he's been hurting ever since. School doesn't interest him much. He doesn't like the girls that go there, either. "All them interested in is grinding up on fellas and rollin up dey neck," he says, "I lookin for something more."

He heads to a park a couple miles away. It is one that the Westmoorings people usually go to. Though he feels out of place and notices white people staring him down, he stays his position on the swings. He won't be intimidated. He is aware they don't like his kind around here. He tries to look chill on the swing in hopes of attracting any girls. Many pass him by. None of them look his way. Soon, he forgets about his quest to attain girls and begins a deep introspection on his life and family.

Hours pass and he just sits there... deep in thought still... bewildered by this confusing, empty time in his life.
